Evolution has played a major role in the way the animals developed. And it is especially apparent when you look at the thousands of different species of animals across the globe, and see the many different ways that they have evolved to eat and process foods to sustain their bodies. And the bird is no different.

The digestive system of birds is different from humans and most mammals in a number of ways. For one, birds do not have teeth. This poses a problem for them when it comes to digesting their food. Teeth serve the useful purpose of breaking up the food into smaller particles so that the body can digest them more easily. But, without teeth, how can this be done?

As the bird species evolved throughout millions of years, they managed to come up with their own unique resolution. Instead of breaking up the foods in their mouth, they break it up in their stomachs. In order to do this, the stomach is broken up into two sections, called chambers.

This can be seen by taking the example of a bird consuming a seed. The bird does not chew the seed. It swallows the seed whole. The seed first falls down into the front chamber. This chamber has many chemicals and digestive juices. Their function is to chemically process the food to help break it down. It works much like the saliva does in human mouths. The food is liberally coated with these digestive juices until it is well mixed.

Following that, the food is passed on to chamber number two. This is the chamber that processes the food physically. This is analogous to the way we physically process the foods in our mouth by chewing.

In practice, the process is relatively simple. The seeds and all of the other foods that the bird has eaten have already been softened up by the digestive juices from the first chamber. Thus the second chamber has a much easier time with the food since it is already partially pre-digested. The bird is able to contract and relax the second chamber walls so that they grind up the food mixture between them.

Besides this, however, the bird has an additional trick up its sleeve. And that trick is grit. Grit is simply a collection of rough granules of sand or stone – and it is an essential element in a bird’s digestion process. To help it to digest food in the second chamber, the bird eats grit. As the walls of the chamber open and close to smash into each other, the grit that the bird has swallowed helps it to break up the food much better than if the food was the only thing present.

Grit is so effective because food is susceptible to being broken up a lot easier when it is being smashed by rough pebbles or grit than it can with just smashing against itself. And this is why you will often see birds eating stones or sand. It’s not for nourishment. It’s to help them digest food.

Choosing a bird cage for your pet bird is very important. When deciding which type or size to purchase you need to take a few things into consideration.

You need to know how large will your pet bird grow. The larger the cage the better it is for your new bird. No matter what breed it is, Cockatiel, Budgie, Canary, Parrot, Cockatoo, etc, all breeds need to have room. Your bird supplier will be able to guide you with this. If you purchase a smaller cage first, it won’t be long before they out grow it and it is only more expense to buy another. Birds need space to be able to move around easily to give them exercise and to help prevent boredom.

Although our Quaker Parrot, Charlie is only small we have changed his cage twice since he became part of our family. We started off with a small average style bird cage but quickly realised he needed a larger one. My son not really thinking, then purchased a taller one that was only a little larger in width than the original one, so it wasn’t long before we had to buy another. Therefore choosing a bird cage for your bird is very important and it is advisable to really think about the size of cage that your pet bird needs when you first start looking at birds for pets. Just have a wander around the pet bird supplies in your pet store and don’t take the first one you see. Charlie loves to sit on top of his bird cage as he loves to be higher than everyone. He can also hop straight onto our shoulder from that height when we put our birdbib on and take him for a walk. We leave his cage door open when we are home and he climbs all over it, both inside and out.

We have kept the original small bird cage incase we need to transport Charlie some time. My son actually went to visit a friend for the weekend and didn’t want to leave Charlie at home on his own, so he put him in the small cage and put it in the back seat of his car with the seat belt around the cage and off they went. Charlie loved it as he doesn’t like to be left out of anything. Once they arrived at their destination Charlie was unlocked and once again able to sit on top of his bird cage. My son’s friends were amazed that Charlie didn’t even attempt to fly away. He loves his cage, after all it is his home.

After purchasing a Quaker Parrot and getting tired of all the washing that goes with sitting him on our shoulders, I designed and made a bird bib to protect our clothing.

Feeding your bird is important. Pet birds need a balanced diet just like humans. There is a large variety of freshly packed seeds available to feed your bird.

As well as normal seed, your bird needs specialised seed or pellets. These seeds or pellets are similar to the food that they would get in their natural environment. There is a large variety available in all pet stores, just wander around the pet bird supplies and read the packaging, then decide which is best for your breed of bird. If you choose a high quality seed, this will help considerable to reduce wastage. Seed is only a part of a bird’s diet, so for a bird to have a balanced diet, it must be given a vitamin and mineral supplement for the essential dietary ingredients it would find if it was living in the wild. Once or twice a week, you may feed your bird either fresh fruit or vegetables as an additional food source.

Charlie our Quaker Parrot loves his fruit and vegetables. He also likes pasta. You will soon be aware of what your pet bird likes to eat and which food is his favourite. They are just like little kids, they will spit our what they don’t want. That is why we put a birdbib on while Charlie is on our shoulders and having a nibble, as he is very messy and it doesn’t worry him where he spits his unwanted food.

Whilst we like to give Charlie a wide variety of foods, I have read that feeding your bird the wrong food can be highly dangerous and even fatal. You must not let your bird eat any of them. They are, avocado, chocolate, apple seeds including cherries, peaches, apricots and pears contain trace amounts of cyanide within their seeds. The fruit of the apple and pear is fine but the seeds are poisonous and there may be pesticides present on the fruit’s skin so it is important to wash all food, onions, mushrooms, tomato leaves including the green coloured part, stems and vines and the same for potatoes, salt, caffeine including soda, coffee, and tea, dried beans are all not to be fed to your pet bird, cooked beans are considered ok as long as they are thoroughly cooked. Boiled eggs and the shell are a good source of nutrition as well.

Cockatiels offer their owners charm and loads of personality and it is a joy to have a cockatiel as a pet. They also come free of the problems such as biting and excessive noise that the bigger parrots bring with them. Although they are not noted for their talking ability like the bigger birds, they can be taught and are good at whistling simple tunes.

Before you consider having a cockatiel as a pet, you need to consider the following:

Do you like animals
Do you have time to care for one properly? C
Can you have pets where you live?

If you have answered yes to the above questions, then you are probably a good candidate for cockatiel ownership.

You must be the sort of person who doesn’t mind a bit of mess, as cockatiels can be messy by discarding their seed hulls, feathers around their cage. You shouldn’t mind the noise either, as they can be quite vocal, especially in the early mornings and evenings. If you are allergic to dust, you might need to consider another pet, as cockatiels will make you sneeze.

If you want a cockatiel as a pet, try to buy one that is young and hand fed. Cockatiels are usually weaned by the time they are eights weeks old, and should be fine to purchase any time from then. They will be easier to train if they are used to human contact and still young.

To maintain a cockatiels lovable personality, they need companionship. You will need to devote about a half hour or more a day paying attention to your bird. If you can’t spare this, get two cockatiels so that they have each other for company.

A half hour a day isn’t really a lot. You could cuddle him while you watch your sitcom, or eat breakfast or dinner together. Let him watch you get ready for work in the mornings. Time can also be spent on training and taming your cockatiel on a daily basis.

Before you become a cockatiel owner you will also need to consider the following:

The total cost of the bird, cage and accessories;
The cost each month for bird food;
The cost of veterinary care;
How busy your life is and how much time you can spend with your bird;
Who will care for your bird if you go away;
How many and what type of pets do you own;
Do you have space in your home for another?
